The test rig at amFilm

Hardness

Every batch is run against a graded pencil set. The sheet has to survive 9H with no visible line under raking light. We also drag a steel key across a sample at a fixed load, because that is the test that matches real life.

Impact

A steel ball is dropped onto a mounted sheet from increasing heights until it fails. What we are watching for is not the height — it is the failure mode. Correct failure is a radial spider that stays bonded to its own adhesive. A sheet that throws a loose shard does not ship.

Clarity and touch

Light transmission is measured against the bare panel. Touch is checked with a drawing app at the four corners and over any under-display sensor, because a reader that works in the middle and fails at the edge is the complaint we hear most often from other brands' customers.

Fit

The cut line is checked on the physical device with three popular cases fitted. A protector that forces a case lip to ride over it will lift within a month, so a margin that looks generous on paper is deliberate.

Scratch life

Hardness tells you whether a tempered glass screen protector survives one encounter. Scratch life tells you how it looks after a year of them. A sample sheet goes into a tumbler with graded sand and a house key for a fixed number of cycles, then comes out and is read under raking light against a fresh one. What we are measuring is the top coat rather than the glass: the coat wears first, and once it is gone the surface drags and hazes even though the glass is intact.

A sheet that hazes early does not ship, because haze is what people actually notice. Structural failure is rare and obvious; a dull screen is slow, cumulative and far more annoying.

Why we test the whole set

The glass is the easy part. Most install failures we see come from everything else in the box, so the wipes, the dust sticker and the alignment tray go through the same bench as the sheet. A tray that flexes drops the protector a millimetre off centre, and a millimetre is the difference between a cut that clears the earpiece and one that does not.

We also fit every new cut blind, by someone who has not read the instructions, on a device that has been in a pocket all day. A set that only works on a clean bench with clean hands is a set that will arrive as a complaint.
